Middle School Curriculum

This lesson introduces the facts of human trafficking. There is an interactive story through which the students put themselves in the shoes of someone their age who followed false promises into a dangerous situation. The objective of this lesson is for students to define human trafficking and identify warning signs of it happening.

This lesson addresses the importance of self-esteem. Students engage in exercises to challenge the media’s ideals of desirability and to define healthy relationships as a shield against traffickers who are looking for a target. A survivor’s story cautions students about harmful messages in the media, allowing them to recognize the impact of media and helping them realize their own significance apart from messages of society.

This lesson deepens students’ understanding of how human trafficking happens by explaining types of trafficking and presenting ways to recognize lures and tactics of traffickers. It includes an interactive story in which students practice making choices in order to learn how they can protect themselves. Students also create ways to use media positively.

This lesson shows students how traffickers use the internet and social media to lure people into dangerous situations. After seeing a video of young adults discussing how they practice online safety, students craft their own pledge for how to be safe online.

This lesson provides profiles of traffickers and victims. Students identify types of trafficking and victim vulnerabilities in various scenarios. They also learn ways to reduce demand for labor trafficking.

This lesson describes risk factors and red flags for human trafficking. Through discussion of a survivor’s story, students synthesize material from all of the lessons. Students review how to protect themselves and how changing their habits can make a difference in the lives of others and in the world
